To Base85

Category: Encoding

Status: Registered and callable in the CyberChef 11.3.0 compatibility inventory.

Input / output: ArrayBuffer → string

Background: https://wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascii85

What it does

Base85 (also called Ascii85) is a notation for encoding arbitrary byte data. It is usually more efficient that Base64. This operation encodes data in an ASCII string (with an alphabet of your choosing, presets included). e.g. hello world becomes BOu!rD]j7BEbo7 Base85 is commonly used in Adobe’s PostScript and PDF file formats. Options Alphabet

  • Standard - The standard alphabet, referred to as Ascii85

  • Z85 (ZeroMQ) - A string-safe variant of Base85, which avoids quote marks and backslash characters

  • IPv6 - A variant of Base85 suitable for encoding IPv6 addresses (RFC 1924)

Include delimiter Adds a ‘’ delimiter to the start and end of the data. This is standard for Adobe’s implementation of Base85.

Note

Status here means the operation name is implemented and callable. It does not by itself promise byte-for-byte parity for every upstream option. See Compatibility and current status for the verified scope and known boundaries.

Arguments and options

Arguments are positional. Keep their order when using bake() or Pipeline.then().

Recipe template

Important

This is a call template built from the documented defaults. Replace placeholder values such as empty keys, paths, patterns, or lookup data before running it.

from pychef import bake

input_value = b"example"
args = ['!-u', False]
result = bake(input_value, [{"op": 'To Base85', "args": args}])
print(result)

Pipeline example

from pychef import Pipeline

args = ['!-u', False]
transform = Pipeline().then('To Base85', *args)
result = transform(b"example")

Dedicated operation module

The registered entry point lives in pychef.operations.by_operation.to_base85. Direct calls receive the input value and a positional argument tuple:

from pychef.operations.by_operation.to_base85 import run

result = run(b"example", tuple(['!-u', False]))
pychef.operations.by_operation.to_base85.run(value, args)

Run this operation using its shared internal implementation.

Parameters:
  • value (str | bytes)

  • args (Sequence[Any])

Return type:

str | bytes
